GAMES: Classic Marvel FASERIP Homebrew Rules/Techniques. New Talent: Quantum Physics Technology

Quantum Physics Technology: Having a background in research and development on quantum physics, the hero with this talent can create, repair, and tinker with devices that allow teleportation, wormhole travel and integrate warp capabilities and hyperdrive into spacecrafts. A PC with this Talent can study and/or conduct research on existing technologies, earning Karma like the Student Talent. Also, this Talent allows the practitioner to create a phase armor/battle-suit and/or “phase compatible” devices. The PC can make artificial versions of the following powers: Dimension Travel, Gateway, Teleport Self or Teleport Others (Ultimate Talents Book, p. 23-24). This skill takes up two (2) Talent slots.

GAMES: Classic Marvel FASERIP Homebrew Rules/Techniques, Matrix Melee Physics

MATRIX MELEE PHYSICSIf a character has at least RM agility, GD Strength and the Acrobatics talent, the character can jump a maximum of 1 area per round. The character has to be at least twice as strong as their weight. The jump could be static-standing leap or a running jump. If a character has succeeded in a multiple attack roll, he or she can perform their spent attacks while still in the air (from a jump or a spinning attack). Also, the individual can do a handstand and attack with their feet.

Here is an example: the hero Neo Anderson stated that he wished to roll for multiple attacks. The roll is successful; he gets three attacks. Since there is distance from his target; Neo wants to run toward his opponent, jump up into the air, delivers kicks before landing on the ground. The Matrix Physics dictates that Neo can sprint one round and jump (1st attack) and deliver two kicks to the target’s face (2nd and 3rd attack). If a character is melee-distance from opponent(s), then the first attack is not spent on maneuvering.

A PC can perform a:

backflip-kick or front flip-kick or capoeira-style maneuver (using individual feet as separate attacks)

flurry of jumping, airborne spin-kicks before returning to the ground

sprint and then an upward leap, delivering a series of attacks before reaching the ground. Movie Examples: Michael Jai White’s fight with Cholos in Blood and Bones; Jet Li; Neo v. Morpheus, Neo v. Agent Smith in The Matrix

single-arm handstand, kicking, and then standing back on their feet. Movie Examples: any Jet Li film; Morpheus v. Agent Smith, Neo v. Agent Smith in The Matrix; capoeira fighter v. Tony Jaa in The Protector

forward leap, is considered a spent attack, only if a multiple attack roll is successful. Movie Examples: Michael Jai White’s fight with Cholos in Blood and Bones; any Jet Li motion picture; Neo v. Morpheus, Neo v. Agent Smith in The Matrix

Personally, using this type of RPG physics makes hand-to-hand battles more exciting to narrate.

What do you think?

Take care and create your own rules.

GAMES: Classic Marvel FASERIP Homebrew Rules/Techniques, Streamlined Evasion/Dodging

This idea wasn't mine. I learned this while playing with another sailor, when serving in the US Navy. The seafarer had players who were agile and found the evasion and dodging rules "clunky and unfair." According to the sailor, it didn't give the PCs a "decent chance to move from attacks," like Spider-Man or Daredevil. So, the bluejacket made the following rule. To me, it's streamlined and makes combat move faster. So, I have incorporated it in my campaigns:

Color Matching or Surpassing Defense Actions: A PC can defend themselves from all aware attacks. The defender must match or surpass the color result of their opponent(s).  For example, if a thug fired a pistol and earned a Green result toward Donut-Man, then hero must roll a defense result, green or better, to avoid the attack. If the attack result was Yellow, Donut-Man must roll a Yellow or Red to avoid getting cut down.

GAMES: Classic Marvel FASERIP Homebrew Rules/Techniques. New Talents: Cryptocurrency and Farming

Our group developed a new talent, which may be helpful and may allow PCs to use their other RPG dice:

Cryptocurrency: This is a specialized form of Business/Finance. The PC is familiar with the world of cryptocurrency, blockchain technology, the history of Bitcoin, electronic-coin finance, and how digital money can be mined. Initial Resources are a minimum of Good, and the PC gains a +1CS for FEAT rolls dealing with spending, investing, and trading digital cash. A hero gains a Contact in the Professional category. A villain gains a Contact in the Criminal Business category and knows how the Black Market/Web works.

Crypto-Mining and/or Solar Farming: A PC can combine this Talent with Electronics, Physics or Computers and Business/Finance or Cryptocurrency; adding +CS to rolls. These successfully built device(s) could produce Karma per game-week. Points earned can only spent on Resource FEATs or Advancements. The Crypto-mining machine or Solar Farm must be checked daily for possible malfunctions. The PC must roll a (d10), if the result is “7”, the invention needs to be worked on. With a successful Reason FEAT combined with (d8) hours of work, it can be accomplished.

The amount of Karma earned depends on the size of the HOME-BASED mining machine and/or solar farm:

·          Small: FE Resource cost and produces (d4) Karma per game-week

·          Medium: TY Resource cost and produces (d6) Karma per game-week

·          Large: GD Resource cost and produces (d8) Karma per game-week

The following is the amount for an INDUSTRIAL mining machine and/or solar farm:

·         Small: EX Resource cost and produces (d10) Karma per game-week

·         Medium: RM Resource cost and produces (d12)Karma per game-week

·         Large: IN Resource cost and produces (d20) Karma per game-week

The same stats could be used for a crop or fish farm.

GAMES: Classic Marvel FASERIP Homebrew Rules/Techniques, Character Creation and Karma Rewards

Character Creation and Karma Rewards: I would give my PCs the choice to use a Template way. The Template is when the PC and Judge negotiate the assigned FASERIP stats by referring to source material. For example, if a Player wanted to a scrapper-type hero with the same or similar stats as Daredevil, then I would assign the same written stats to the new character, without rolling dice. However, I would give the character the lowest numbers in each ability. Reason: they are new character and do not have the Standard Numbers of established Marvel Superheroes. Personally, I like the Template method because I do not like random stuff.

If a player wants to roll randomly, he/she can do so. Once the Stats are created, the Player could shuffle the ability points, if desired.

If a Player desires to make more than one character, I will allow it. Karma earned goes to the Player of the Characters and they could transfer Karma from Character-to-Character. Sometimes, the Character could be a temporary NPC or continue on projects started by the PC, it depends on the situation. Also, I will reward a Player if I use their character as an NPC, maybe 150-200 Karma. However, Players could create a Character with fits a different archetype. For example, I may not allow a Player to create 3 Scrappers. He/she must make 3 Characters that fit into 3 different archetypes (a Scrapper, a Tanker [ex. Thing or Hulk], and a Blaster [Human Torch or Cyclops]; or a Scrapper, a Controller [ex. Doctor Strange], and a Defender [Invisible Woman or Jean Grey]; or any other combination). Then again, why limit the players on character creation?

Super-Soldier PCs will have Captain America or Taskmaster standard stats. There will not be any improvements in any FASE abilities.

If a Player creates an archvillain, I shall reward the creator 300 Karma. Additional villains made shall be rewarded 150 Karma, each. Or I could leave the rewards up to the dice. The type of dice rolled could be discussed.

SEA STORY: Indonesia

This is a “sea-story” about my visit to Indonesia.

When I was stationed in Yokosuka, Japan, I was a crewmember of the USS Vandegrift

At the beginning of April 2005, I was nominated by the captain, to assist the sailors onboard the USNS Mercy.

The Mercy was near a small Indonesian island, Nias, which was devastated by a tsunami and an earthquake. She was one of the vessels called during Operation Unified Assistance and worked, offshore, since January (Smith, 2005).

After receiving my temporary orders, I quickly packed and was driven to Narita Airport. Two jets and a helicopter trip later, I was on the Mercy. Besides having a dinner conversation with a female NCIS agent, teaching a civilian nurse to salsa and getting my picture taken by a US Navy media-representative, my first twenty days were uneventful. I confess that was getting grumpy. So, when my supervisor asked for volunteers for a Nias boarding-party, I quickly signed up.

Our group was transported by a USS Jackson helicopter. Once on Nias, we were greeted by three male translators. The young men told us that Indonesians enjoy smiling, even to strangers, and consider not smiling in return to be rude. In addition, the translators said that Indonesians are extremely friendly to visitors. After a brief tour, the boarding party broke up into smaller groups. I stayed with one translator, sitting on a park bench. In the middle of our conversation, an 8-year-old girl sat on my lap! She smiled at me, showing her missing front teeth. Being polite, I beamed back. Then, the girl took off my ship-ballcap and grabbed my hair with both hands. She said a phrase that I did not understand, so I turned to the translator. The interpreter stated that she liked African Americans with curly hair and asked for an autograph. While the young admirer was messing up my hairstyle, I scribbled my signature, my rank and “United States Navy” on her notebook.

  • Superhero/Comics
  • Health/Fitness
  • US Navy and Merchant Sailor/Marine Sea Stories
  • Games
  • Investments/Finances
  • Philosophy
